Cripple is defined as:
Cripple is a funny word. As a Cripple, I identify myself as one and even though my people have other titles, we enjoy being called Cripple the most. Able-Bodied people ignore us because they are not comfortable engaging with us. We need to change this misconception. Please take part in helping us all change what we see when we encounter a person in a wheelchair. Cripple Power Forever!! Cripple Power is a lot like a super power every cripple has, but as Stan Lee once said; "With great power there must also come great responsibility". It is the power of persuasion when asking someone for help, unless they are having a bad day most people will be happy to help, no matter what it is. It is fantastic to say hello to someone in a wheelchair. It will make the day of everyone involved.
I am an adult living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). If you don't know DMD is only one of many types of Muscular Dystrophy. Basically, my body does not create muscle and I lose muscle strength and mobility over time. I was diagnosed at 5 years old by Dr. Stephen Smith who has been very well known in the Muscular Dystrophy community even after his death in 2018. When explaining DMD to me he used the example of Swiss Cheese to describe my muscles and I have used that analogy ever sense. If you want the more scientific explanation you're going to have to ask Google because that is long and boring. I was diagnosed to live to be 25 years old and at 29 life is fantastic for me.
When I was a teenager I noticed some ''privileges'' that were actually pretty cool for a disabled teen, and I mean more then just the parking spot. During the summer of 6th grade the school district I was in had a daycare type program called Peak and they would have field trips twice a week. The most anticipated trip was going to Valley Fair, which is basically my states Six Flags, and us kids had to sign up in groups of six. Now I already had gotten the, what I like to call, Cripple Treatment before when I would go with family but my five friends had no idea. When going as/with a Cripple like me you will not have to wait in lines but instead go directly to the front and because I needed to be lifted from my chair into the ride me and my group got to ride twice in a row. The trade off was that you would not be able to ride again without waiting in line but with so many rides that was a really great deal. Honestly, it was really amazing, as a teenager in a powerchair, getting to tell your able-bodied friends "you're with a Cripple check this out!" Experiences like that really helped me cope with a lot of the negative sides of being confined to a powerchair.
